Server-side GTM for a B2B SaaS platform losing data to ad blockers

Moved GA4, Google Ads and Meta CAPI onto a first-party server container on a subdomain. Recovered roughly 22% of previously-blocked events and cut third-party script weight on the marketing site by 40%.

A B2B SaaS platform was losing roughly 22% of marketing analytics events to ad blockers. Their attribution data was systematically under-counting the channels that drove signups.

The problem

Ad blockers were silently dropping GA4 and Google Ads conversion tags for a significant portion of visitors. The marketing team’s channel attribution was skewed, and they were unknowingly over-investing in channels that only appeared to perform because blocker-heavy channels were under-reported.

What I did

  • Set up a server-side GTM container on the client’s subdomain (sgtm.client.com)
  • Migrated GA4, Google Ads, and Meta CAPI tags to fire server-side
  • Configured first-party cookie management to extend attribution windows
  • Reduced third-party script weight on the marketing site by removing client-side equivalents

The result

+22%events recovered from blockers
-40%third-party script weight
